About the project
An immersive journey into the nature, stories and myths that shape the island — inviting visitors to experience Terschelling beyond the familiar.
Context
How do you introduce visitors to an island that is already loved by so many?
Inside the iconic Tonnenloods, Kijken met andere ogen offers a fresh perspective on Terschelling. Rather than simply presenting information about the island, the experience invites visitors to step into its landscapes, discover its ecosystems and explore the stories that have shaped its identity.

Approach
Two immersive worlds
The experience unfolds across two distinct spaces, each revealing a different side of Terschelling.
Nature
In the first room, 360-degree projections transform the space into seven natural environments found across the island.
Visitors journey through dunes, tidal flats and the sea as large-scale imagery and animation bring the island’s diverse ecosystems to life.
The changing landscapes invite visitors to look closer, notice the details and discover the delicate balance of the natural world around them.

Stories and Myths
The second room explores the tales and folklore passed down through generations.
Short animated films are projected onto a sail, bringing local stories to life. Beneath visitors’ feet, a projected map connects each narrative to its geographical origins, linking the stories to the places that inspired them.
Through animation, projection and spatial storytelling, the island’s cultural heritage becomes something visitors can experience, not just hear about.

Impact
Kijken met andere ogen turns a visit to the Tonnenloods into an invitation to rediscover Terschelling.
By bringing its natural environments and local stories into an immersive setting, the experience encourages visitors to slow down, explore and form a deeper connection with the island.
Because sometimes, seeing a place differently is the beginning of discovering something new.
An immersive experience that brings Terschelling’s landscapes, ecosystems and folklore together — revealing the island through a different lens.
