About the project
Two immersive journeys through Rotterdam’s origins and evolution, turning the city’s history into a world visitors can step into.
Context
Rotterdam’s identity is inseparable from its relationship with water.
From the first settlements along the river Rotte to the dynamic, modern city it is today, its story is one of transformation, resilience and growth.
For Euromast, we translated this history into two immersive experiences that take visitors beyond the city’s skyline and into the stories that shaped it. Rather than simply presenting historical facts, the aim was to make Rotterdam’s evolution tangible through a cinematic, sensory journey.
Approach
We developed two connected narratives: one exploring the birth of Rotterdam, the other celebrating the city as it exists today.
Risen from the Water takes visitors back to the marshlands along the river Rotte. Through a journey of rising water, shifting landscapes and the construction of a dam, the story reveals how the foundations of Rotterdam were laid. Visitors become part of this transformation: by moving through the space, they help reclaim the land, echoing the collective effort that made the city possible.
A Colourful Panorama brings the story forward, tracing the construction of the Euromast in the 1960s and ascending into the Rotterdam of today. The journey connects the tower’s maritime inspiration to the city’s architectural landmarks, revealing a vibrant urban landscape through movement, colour and animation.
Combining CGI, textural visual storytelling and spatial audio, both experiences turn historical narratives into immersive worlds, where image, sound and movement work together to bring the city’s story to life.
Impact
Together, the two experiences offer more than a view of Rotterdam. They reveal the forces, ideas and transformations that shaped the city, connecting its origins to its present.
By placing visitors inside the narrative, history becomes something to explore rather than simply observe. The city’s story unfolds around them, transforming the act of learning into an experience of discovery.
